Understanding Lottery Format
This calculator handles five lottery formats. Lottery games fall into five structures:
- Simple Game – Pick x numbers from a set of y balls. In a 6/49 game, you pick 6 numbers from a pool of 49. Gimme 5 works the same way: 5 numbers from 39.
- Lottery Game with One Extra Ball from a Separate Drum – Powerball is the most familiar example. You pick 5 numbers from 59, then 1 number from a separate set of 26. Six numbers total, two drums.
- Game with Two Extra Numbers from a Separate Drum – EuroMillions and EuroJackpot both use this format. Five numbers from 50, plus 2 from a separate drum of 12. Seven numbers, two drums.
- Lottery Game with One Supplementary Number from the Same Drum – Same structure as a simple game, but one extra number is drawn from the same pool. The Irish Lotto draws 6 numbers from 47, then pulls a seventh from that same drum.
- Game with Two Supplementary Numbers from the Same Drum – Again, same basic structure, but two extra balls come from the same pool. In Australia Saturday Lotto, 8 numbers are drawn total and you need the first 6 to match for the jackpot.
Knowing the Difference Between Simple and Extra-Ball Lottery Games
Not all lottery games work the same way. The math behind each one depends on how the game is built. There are three basic structures.
1. Simple Lottery Game (No Extra Balls)One pool of balls, one draw. You pick a fixed set of numbers, say 6 out of 49, and all of them come from the same drum. Match all 6 and the jackpot is yours. Prize tiers are straightforward: matching 3, 4, or 5 numbers each pays out according to a fixed scale. The jackpot odds come from a single calculation with no moving parts.
2. Lottery with Extra Ball(s) from a Separate DrumTwo drums complicate things. The extra ball creates additional prize tiers: matching just the extra ball pays something, matching 3 main numbers plus the extra ball pays something else, and so on. The jackpot itself becomes harder to reach because you need to match both the main numbers and the extra ball. That second requirement multiplies the total number of possible outcomes, which is exactly what pushes the jackpot odds higher.
3. Lottery Games with Supplementary NumbersHere the supplementary numbers come from the same drum as the main draw. That means the jackpot odds are identical to a simple game. The supplementary numbers only affect the smaller prize tiers, giving players more ways to land a lower-tier prize without touching the jackpot calculation at all.

Understanding Lottery Odds and Probability
Probability and odds are related terms, but they use different formulas and describe likelihood in different ways. Knowing the difference matters when reading lottery math.
What is probability in the lottery?
Probability runs on a scale from 0 to 1. Zero means the outcome cannot happen. One means it will happen without fail. Somewhere in the middle, 0.5, is the exact point where the chances split evenly in two.

Odds scale with ticket count. With 10 tickets, the favorable outcomes become 10, and the unfavorable outcomes become 45,057,464 (45,057,474 minus 10). The odds in favor are then 10:45,057,464, which simplifies to roughly 1:4,505,746 per ticket.
The same calculation applies to smaller prizes. In a 6/49 lottery, the odds in favor of matching exactly 3 numbers are approximately 1:55.65. On average, one occurrence per 56 tickets.
